How did the Hub Controller save Irish homes €1 million on their energy bills?

Since January of this year Hub Controls have installed over 4000 smart thermostats in Irish homes. These homes have saved an average of €250 on their annual heating bill. That’s a lot of energy saved! To find out how, keep on reading…

The premise behind smart thermostats is that they save money and energy by keeping the temperature as low as possible for as long as possible. Typically, you enter your desired temperature and your daily on/off heating schedule. Based on this information the thermostat ensures the room is heated to the right level when required and saves as much energy as possible when it is not needed. Smart thermostats are much easier to use than regular programmable thermostats, which means you will use it more often and adjust it as your schedule changes.

One of the most popular features of the Hub Controller is the ability to pair the device with your smart phone and giving you complete control. However, the real benefit of installing a Hub Controller in your home is how it manages the heating cycle, The heating cycle is the process whereby your boiler and radiators work together to raise the temperature in your home.

Heating cycles played a part in the energy/money saving. If a customer heats their house to a set temperature the Hub Controller will actively maintain this temperature at the desired level, while still maintaining comfort in the home.

Our trial was based on the precept that we could deliver significant saving. The trial confirmed this as we demonstrated average household savings of 30%. These results were verified by UCD Energy Institute.

How it was done & numbers involved

The Hub Controller Pilot trial was delivered through the EEOS (Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme) under the scheme energy credits can be claimed for defined energy saving measures, including the installation of the heating controls. This scheme covered the cost of the product and its installation. With the average saving verified at €250 per annum, 4000 installs equates to €1,000,000 in energy savings!

An additional benefit to installing the Hub Controller is the amount of energy efficiency information it collects. This is done passively through the householders’ Wi-fi connection and the Hub Centralized system. This includes:

  • The set temperature in the house (i.e. the desired temp)
  • The ambient temperature in the house
  • The times the heating is on/off
  • User behaviour from the smartphone app
  • Messages to and from the customer and the Hub Centralized system
  • Homes heating and cooling efficiency

How the savings were calculated

As a result of the diagnostic and data gathering of the Hub Controller all savings can be seen not only by the Hub Team but also by the customers themselves through the spend screen on the Hub Controller.

The Hub Controller connects to the Hub Centralized system every 160 seconds of every day, a total or nearly 200,000 connections per device per year. This allows us to accurately calculate the savings in energy and money.

As with most household costs the ability to transparently see exactly what is spent creates a security of spend and complete control of household heating budgeting

What savings were calculated?

In addition to the automatic savings, you can also make a difference to your energy save and carbon footprint. This is a small wins game where many small wins add up to substantial energy savings. Lowering your thermostat by 1 degree can knock of 10% off your heating bill. This doesn’t seem like much but considering Irish weather it all adds up.

Environmental Benefits

The easiest way to see the environmental benefits of the Hub Controller is to directly compare them to the money saved by each household. The heating system in your home contributes to 60% of your total energy consumption. It is therefore important that you tackle this area of your energy consumption first in order to get the most savings on your energy bill.

Since Ireland and the EU are deeply committed to reducing carbon footprint, Hub Controls are proud to be helping Irish consumers be part of the change that starts at home!
